These specialised aircraft were responsible for the sometimes hazardous Volant DEW resupply mission to DEW-Line radar stations on the Alaska, Canada and Greenland ice cap.
The EC-130Q was used to communicate with US Navy submarines while they remained submerged. To achieve this a 30,000ft antenna was spooled out behind the aircraft to transfer data with very low frequency (VLF) signals that could penetrate sea water.
